Born in Honea Path, he was a son of the late Gus “R.B.” and Janie Lou Lollis Richey.  He had worked as a mechanic at Parke-Davis.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Richey of Laurens, three brothers, Calvin Richey (Mildred) of Belton, Roger Richey (Carla) of Honea Path, and Jackie Ray Richey (Amanda) of Honea Path, two sisters, Pat Lee (Sid) of Waterloo, and Cathy Rowland (Kenny) of Honea Path.
