Born in Greenwood he was a son of the late Joseph and Margaret Saxon Stone. He was a member of New Covenant Church and a 1964 graduate of Ware Shoals High School. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Ware Shoals Golf Course. He found great joy in watching his grandchildren compete in sports - from soccer and basketball to football, softball, and baseball.  He also had a gentle heart for animals, with a special, calming presence that seemed to put them at ease.

He retired from CSX Railroad with 30 years of service.

Surviving in addition to his wife Sylvia are a daughter, Sherylan Batson (David) of Waterloo, a son, Chris Stone (Jacqueline) of Irmo, five grandchildren, Amber Bonetti (Jonathan), Jordan Batson (Trevor), Braden Batson (Kelly), Madison Stone (Matt) and Evan Stone (Gabi), and five great grandchildren, Philippa, Camilla, Crue, Copeland, and Gabriel.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Caroline Stone and Betty Whiteside.

Family memorial services will be held at 5 PM on Friday July 11, 2025 at New Covenant Church with Rev. David Harrell officiating.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends from 4 to 5 PM on Friday at New Covenant Church prior to the service.
