David “Eagle” Green

Honea Path – David “Eagle” Edgar Green, 95, of Honea Path, entered the gates of Heaven on July 7, 2025 and heard “Well done” from his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

After worshipping Jesus, he was reunited with the love of his life, his late wife Shirley La Vern Gaillard Green. He was the son of the late Fred and Mattie Smpson Green.

A proud Korean War (Army) veteran, you rarely saw him without his hats signifying his service to his country. As the oldest member of the Honea Path Church of God, he had served numerous roles over the 70+ years he faithfully attended. He was the last remaining member of the building committee for the current church building built in 1973. He and Rev. Ferris Moore were responsible for the selection of the building site located at 13 Princeton Highway. His favorite role was head usher where he told every usher he would be happy to double their pay (from 0 to 0). An avid fisherman, he could lead you to the best fishing holes around, you just had to be ready to get dirty and hike to find them. When you got there, you would always have a Pepsi and sweet cake. He was known to family as Dake, as Eagle to friends, and as Cousin (cuz) to numerous former BHP students. David retired from Anderson District 2, where he served as custodian of Belton-Honea Path High School and the district office. You could easily find him by following the tunes he was whistling. He loved to travel with his family and friends and visited most of the US and several foreign countries. A man with a heart for God, his church and his family he will be greatly missed by all those who love him.

He is survived by his sister, who he helped raise, Connie (Larry Joe) Green Mattison of Honea Path. She loved him more than a brother and more like a father. He cared for her when she needed it most and she in turn did the same for him. Two nieces, who were raised and loved as grandchildren; Melinda (Allen) Miller and Jamie (Jessie) Owens both of Honea Path. Great niece and nephew who loved him as a great grandpa, Emilie and Aidan Miller. Along with great niece Isla Shay Miller, who he always called his sweetheart and she faithfully visited him with her Granny (Connie) during his time at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. Brother Jim Green and sister-in-law Brenda Green, of Honea Path. Brenda has been a source of strength and help for Connie during the care of David. He is also survived by sister Gaynelle Green Gaillard and brother Pete Green both of Honea Path.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin “Peanut” Green and Bob Green.

The family would like to thank the staff of Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home for the amazing care they rendered over the last year. Your kindness, patience and dedication are seen and appreciated.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday July 10, 2025 at Honea Path Church of God with Rev. M. Eric Shuler officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Garden of Memories.

The family is at the home of his sister Connie and will receive friends from 1-2 P.M. Thursday at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Honea Path Church of God, 13 Princeton Hwy, Honea Path SC 29654.
