Born in Winterville, GA, he was a son of the late Clyde and Alvie Helton McDonald. He was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from Woodside Mills Beattie Plant of Simpsonville.

Surviving are two sons, Glen “Jose” McDonald (Jimmie Lynn) of Donalds, and Raymond McDonald of Greenwood, and one daughter, Tammy Pace (Irvin) of Greenwood, one brother David McDonald (Florence) of Athens, GA and one sister Cora Ann English of Athens, GA, six grandchildren, Amber, Austin, Adam, Michael, Tori and Rhonda and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters.
