Joel L. Blackwell

Joel L. Blackwell, 87, of Honea Path and Augusta GA, died Thursday, March 8 after a brief illness.

The son of Richard “Ben” and Belle Blackwell, he was a World War II US Navy veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served his country in campaigns in both the North Atlantic and Pacific arenas aboard the USS Roosevelt and the USS Anderson.  A Gunner’s Mate, 3rd Class, he was proud to have crewed on the ship which delivered the Bataan survivors home to the US.

He was retired from a career with Greenwood Packing Co. Carolina Pride.  He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a former Mason, Lion’s Club and American Legion member.

Privileged to have had the love of two women, the late Argyll “Bunny” Pruitt, and his wife of 21 years Marjorie V. Blackwell, Joe is also survived by a son Joel M. “Marty” Blackwell and his wife Paula of Belton; a daughter Argyll B. Dorn and her husband Haynes of Flat Rock NC; four granddaughters: Traynham Dorn and her husband Anthony Locklear of Raleigh NC; Tasha Wright and her husband Keenan of Durham NC; Tai Dorn of Charlotte NC; and Kristin Blackwell of Belton; two great-grandchildren: Kobe and Laila Wright of Durham NC.

Graveside services will be held at 3 PM Sunday at the Garden of Memories.  Visitation will be at 1:30 pm Sunday at Parker White Pruitt Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church, Honea Path.

Ware Shoals - James Faron Timms, 57, husband of Robbie Allen Timms of 1405 Old Shoals Junction Road died Thursday March 8, 2012 at his home.  He was born in Greenwood County, a son of James Oscar and Barbara McGaha Timms.  He was a member of West Main St. Church of God and employed by Nickels Land Clearing, Inc.

Henry Gambrell

Donalds – Henry Albert Gambrell, 61, widower of Cathy Cooley Gambrell, of 254 Williamson Hill Rd., died Thursday, February 1, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Anderson County he was a son of the late Henry Haywood and Mary Elanor Moon Gambrell.

Surviving are two sons, Josh Gambrell of Honea Path and Rickey Gambrell of Anderson, two brothers, William Charles “Dickie” Gambrell and wife Wanda of Honea Path, Ronnie Gambrell of Donalds, two sisters Stella Gambrell and Glenda Ford  both of Honea Path, and  two grandchildren, Oston  and Jackson Gambrell. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Robert and Rickey Gambrell and a sister Sandra Jennings.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 P.M. Saturday at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rickey Knight officiating. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery.

Bill Chapman

St. Petersburg, Fl. – William “Bill” Harold Chapman, 91, widower of Ola Mae Beasley Chapman, of 109 34th Ave. North, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Albert and Naomi Kinard Chapman. He was a member of Calvery Baptist Church of Williamston and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II. He was a retired contractor.

Surviving are three daughters, Gale Glancy and husband Tom of Mableton, Ga., Betty Walsek and husband. Ted of Gulfport, FL, Patricia Minor and husband, Dan of Maple Valley, WA, three sisters, Elizabeth Eskew and Irene Darby, both of Williamston, and Evelene Caldwell of Belton, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Clyde Chapman and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Chapman officiating.
