Born in Abbeville County he was a son of the late Prince Alvin and Linnie Ashworth Whitman. He was a member of Donalds Church of God and retired from Monsanto.

 Surviving are, two daughters, Linnie Kate Jones of Honea Path, and Nellie Inez Morrow of Pendleton, a brother, Donald Ray Whitman and a sister, Linnie Ruth McCullough, both of Lownesville, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Alvin T. Whitman, Jr.
