Joe Skinner

Ware Shoals – Joseph Franklin Skinner, 81, husband of Zell Henderson Skinner, of 15 Green Acres Circle, died Saturday, September 7, 2013 at his home.

 

 

Born June 16, 1932 in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late Thomas Marvin and Elizabeth Page Skinner. He was a member of Ware Shoals First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Garner Memorial Sunday School Class, a member of the Adult Choir, and served as a Deacon. He was the co-owner, along with Marion Carnell, of the Piggly Wiggly store in Ware Shoals for 59 years and the co-owner of the Piggly Wiggly store in Ninety Six. Joe was a retired veteran of the South Carolina National Guard after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Lions Club for 59 years. He was a member of Ware Shoals Lodge #306 A.F.M. Joe’s love of Ware Shoals truly showed in his devotion to the town’s annual Catfish Feastival, with his involvement for 32 years. He served as Catfish Feastival Chairman for 23 years. The Catfish Building was named in honor of him in 2006. Joe was honored by the Governor of South Carolina with The Order of the Silver Crescent, for his volunteer and community service, on May 22, 2013.

Surviving in addition to his loving wife of the home are: a son, Keith Skinner and wife Tina of Donalds, three daughters, Donna King and husband Johnny of Ware Shoals, Tammy Davis and companion Michael Clark of Ware Shoals, and Sharon Mann and husband Mark of Ware Shoals, two sisters, Ruby S. Hardy and husband George of Liberty, and Jane S. Corley of Johnston, a sister-in-law, Edith Skinner of Laurens, 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Paul, Ralph, Carroll and James Alfred Skinner, and a sister, Alma Lee Skinner.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Ware Shoals First Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Jones and Rev. Dr. Floyd Parker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be grandsons: Jason Skinner, Nathan Skinner, Justin King, Tanner Workman, Clay Davis, Wesley Skinner, Jawn Paul Skinner, and Carson Mann.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Garner Memorial Sunday School Class and Deacons and former Deacons of Ware Shoals First Baptist Church,and Leroy Bussey.

The family is at the home and will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Ware Shoals First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 408 W.
