Wilbur McClain

Donalds – Samuel Wilbur McClain, Sr., 81, husband of Mildred Smith McClain of 6316 Hwy 184 East, died March 4, 2014 at Hospice of the Piedmont in Greenwood.

Born July 18, 1932 in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late James Harvey and Annie Lee Strawhorn McClain.  He attended Ware Shoals High School.  Mr. McClain retired from Grimes Aerospace in 1999.  He was a scholarship donor to the University of South Carolina for over 25 years where he and his wife enjoyed many years of travel to watch his beloved Gamecock Football Team.  He was a member of Due West Baptist Church where he was a former SS Superintendent, choir member and had served as a custodian of the church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a son, Ricky W. McClain and wife Rebecca of Greenwood; one daughter, Vickie L. McClain and husband Jerry of Iva; two grandsons, Samuel McClain and wife Kayla of Columbia, Daniel McClain who attends the University of South Carolina; one brother, Jimmy McClain and family of Ware Shoals and one sister, Sandra Allen and family of Aiken, SC.  He was predeceased by a son, Samuel W. McClain, Jr.; one brother, Michael Ray McClain and one sister, Lucille Andrews.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Friday at Due West Baptist Church with Rev. James Bannister officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakbrook Memorial Park in Greenwood. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School class and Deacons of the church.

The family is at the home and will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at Pruitt Funeral Home, Honea Path.  Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Street, Greenwood, SC  29646 or to Due West Baptist Church, 218 S. Main Street, Due West, SC 29639.   The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the Hospice Staff for the excellent and compassionate care given to Mr. McClain the last 11 months at home and at the Hospice House, in addition to the kindness shown to the family during the time of need.
