Born in Anderson he was a son of the late Robert Oscar and Hassie Elizabeth Ouzts Wheeler. Sonny was retired from Chiquola Mills/Springs Industries where he was a manager for many years. He was an avid fisherman and spent much time on the water with his fishing buddies. Sonny coached Softball for many years leading his team to several championships. He was a huge supporter and fan of BHP Football and Softball . Sonny was a dirt track legend around these parts and drove his famous #20 to many track championships.
While Sonny had many hobbies, he mainly enjoyed supporting his granddaughter’s Maddi and Liv. He loved to watch Maddi cheer on Friday nights during her high school years and he was Liv’s biggest fan as she played softball all across the southeast. Liv followed in her Papa’s footsteps to coach softball, coaching at BHP and now as the head coach of Wren High School Softball. He was so proud of them and told everyone he knew about his girls.
Surviving is his daughter, Tonya (Brian) Fields of Honea Path, and two granddaughters, Maddi Merner (Jacob) and Liv Fields. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Robert “Bob” Wayne Wheeler and a sister, Betty Jean Radford.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025 at 3 P.M. at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel in Honea Path with Rev Mark Krieger officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories.
