Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Robert Earl and Ruth Jones Hughes. He was a veteran of the South Carolina Army National Guard and retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a city carrier in Ware Shoals. Donnie always excelled at sports, most notably when he lettered in 4 sports in high school. He then went on to play football for the Furman Paladins. He was also an avid golfer.
Surviving are: his son, Chris Hughes of Laurens; his daughter, Donna Jo (Porter) Smith of Alabama; his sister, Jan (Tommy) Jones of Honea Path; two sisters in law, Patricia (Johnny) Cox and Cheryl Hughes, both of Honea Path; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Donnie was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Rudy Hughes and Barry Hughes; and a grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at 1 P.M. Thursday, December 11, 2025 at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Shane Elrod officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Pruitt Funeral Home.
