Born in Belton SC, he was a son of the late James Alvin and Willie Mae Henderson Elgin. He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Owens-Corning after 36 years of service. Jim was an avid disc golf player.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 60 years of the home are: three sons, James Thaddeus (Sherry) Elgin of Starr, Wilson Clayborne (Amy) Elgin of Chapin and Neal (Susie) Elgin of Prosperity; a brother, Wayne Elgin of Honea Path; two sisters, Kim Green and Judy Sutherland, both of Anderson; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and three special nieces, Tina Golden, Mary Johnson and Gaye Griffin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe Elgin and Johnny Elgin; and a sister, Elaine Glasby.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Monday, August 3, 2026 at 2 P.M. at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Dr. David Pickens officiating.
The family is at their respective homes and will speak with friends following the service at 3 P.M. Monday at Unity Baptist Church in Starr, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to The Alzhemiers Association, at www.alz.org
